Glencroft was established in the Yorkshire Dales in 1987 as a British brand of trustworthy countrywear all made from natural sheep products including British wool, tweed and sheepskin.
Everything in the Glencroft range is responsibly sourced and manufactured, which means we aim to manufacture either in house or as locally as we can while paying people a decent wage and use locally sourced and natural materials such as 100% British Wool and sheepskin from British sheep, tweeds from Yorkshire mills and genuine Harris Tweed.
Glencroft is a family business started by Richard and Justina Sexton and now also run by the second generation, Edward Sexton. Richard has worked in the sheepskin and wool industry since the 1960s. He used his experience working and manufacturing with British factories, tanneries and mills to create our unique range. This is something we continue to do to this day and Richard still hand trims over 100 sheepskin rugs each week in our 200 year old converted cow barn warehouse.
We began as primarily a trade and wholesale business supplying shops all over the UK and internationally, you'll find our products in many independent shops from the highlands of Scotland to downtown Tokyo. You can now also purchase directly from us via our retail website (linked in our profile).
Our brand name Glencroft, was chosen to reflect our rural British and Yorkshire heritage with designs inspired by the Yorkshire Dales countryside, as well as our close links to Scotland where many of our loyal trade customers are based - indeed many of our materials are Scottish (including Harris Tweed) and we incorporate many Scottish designs into our products.
Wherever possible, Glencroft manufactures products in the UK. Sheepskin hats are made in house. All jumpers, knitted scarves and hats are made in the North of England and the majority are also made from 100% British wool (we have a couple British made 100% Merino wool jumpers). All tweed, knitted and wax hats and caps are made in the North of England. All woven lambswool and cashmere scarves, and travel rug throws are made in Yorkshire woollen mills. Natural and rare breed British sheepskin rugs are made from British sheep, tanned in the UK and finished by Richard Sexton by hand in the Glencroft warehouse. All wool lined moccasins and slippers are made in the UK. Most accessories are made in the UK. This includes all real leather handbags, belts, wool dusters, wool insoles, sheepskin care brushes and model sheep. The origin of all of our retail products is clearly displayed on our website and product labelling. We have a handful of products we are unable to make in the UK any more (gloves, mittens and sheepskin slippers) and so we are very proud to produce these in trusted factories in Portugal, again using responsibly sourced materials - these are very clearly marked as such.
The majority of our jumpers are made from 100% British wool and all entirely manufactured in Britain, Manchester to be precise. Glencroft is a member of the British Wool Marketing Board and are committed to using 100% British Wool wherever possible. Sheepskin for hats is sourced from a British tannery where possible (about half of all hat manufacture). Other sheepskin is sourced from Europe, mainly Iceland or Portugal. Genuine Harris Tweed woven in the Outer Hebrides is used for a selection of hats and jumpers. All labels are manufactured in either the UK and Turkey by British label firms. Where Richard Sexton & Co has purchased packaging this has been made in the UK. All boxes used for the wholesale business are reused or second hand, no new boxes are purchased. Sheepskin slippers and gloves are made in Portugal from British and European skins.
