Started over ten years ago with the aim to celebrate and promote the wonderful, sustainable, natural fibre resources we have in the UK. It has grown from a single idea to an in-house range of patterns, kits, yarns and bespoke finished garments and home wares. All of which are produced from scratch at our home base in rural Somerset. We use natural dyes often foraged metres from our door, acid dye techniques and traceable yarn sources. Often we have visited the farms, talked to the farmers, smallholders and hobbyists and met the animals.
Our range of finished accessories and homewares are all unique to the owner and have become collectors pieces. This range is expanding in the coming months with the aim to be available to wholesale customers. At present our yarns, patterns and kits are available for wholesale.
There is a thirst for knowledge about sources, treatment and eco and sustainability. We have as a company been proactive in teaching consumers about the wool and fibre industry, promoting good practices and choice in workshops at National consumer shows and on Hochanda TV. It is a pleasure to see a measurable change in consumer awareness. We have expanded into the retail environment and stock premium British (and some international brands) that conform to the same ethos of natural, heritage, sustainable, traceable and ethically produced fibre.
As future projects we are developing yarn colours using waste materials, trying to bridge the barrier of communication between farmer and consumer and continue to promote natural fibres.
All The Lace Knittery products are produced in-house in Somerset. Our other stocked heritage brands are UK based or part of local heritage fibre industries (we stock and use Icelandic wool). Natural dye products are often foraged from around the business or home reducing yarn miles and inspired by the myth and magic of these British Isles.
All are traceable. We use British fibre where possible. Merino is sourced from South America due to it’s high welfare standards and no mulesing. It is sourced from smaller farms and producers allowing there way of life to continue and be sustainable. Linen and some mohair is European from sustainable farms and plants. All other fibre is UK and as local as possible to our home base in Somerset.
