Monika The Label, the eponymous brand started by Monika Young, was born out of a desire to make sustainable fashion for wild-hearted girls who wanted to find cool clothes whilst making eco-friendly choices. Driven by her love of Cali-cool and East London grunge, the brand aims to encourage slow fashion with collections that are designed to be centre stage in wardrobes for years to come.
Having experience in fashion buying for top companies, such as Zalando, Monika has been able to keep her finger on the pulse designing clothes for young women living in fast-paced cities like London and Berlin. Following her 70’s boho aesthetic, Monika saw a gap in the market for a European label that produced Cali-style dresses as she was constantly having to purchase from international labels. Monika The Label has been the result of Monika’s growing concern for the fashion industry’s treatment of the planet. Environmentally friendly fabrics, UK factories and low-carbon footprints are at the core of all the business’s decision-making. Monika The Label is currently being produced in North London by a team of garment technologists that are paid and treated fairly.
Monika Young says of the launch of her brand, “I wanted to create a label that allows women to find vintage-inspired wearable pieces without worrying about their impact on the environment. Sustainability is not just about reducing your carbon footprint, but also protecting the workers who make our clothes. I was determined to create a label that protects both our planet and the people that produce our collection.”
The label’s collection is purposely limited due to the zero-waste manufacturing being implemented in production. If ever there are any fabric off-cuts going spare, the brand donates these to charity or produces into Monika The Label bandanas and other accessories. The majority of the collection is produced in Regenesis Light Satin, an OEKTO TEX-certified fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. Occasionally, silk satin and pure organic cotton is used too. The label’s digitally designed prints are produced using AZO dye-free inks that are water-based and non-toxic. Every order processed is sent out in fully recyclable packaging, completely free of plastic.
