Designer , Poet, Creator of bespoke goods with a passion for fashion. Having been a bridal designer and bespoke dressmaker for most of of my professional life , I now enjoy making things that are useful and a little bit different and also writing and illustrating poetry. Being creative is a wonderful way to banish the blues and help with mental well-being. Motto: Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.
THE LONDON COLLEGE of FASHION and CLOTHING TECHNOLOGY was where I trained for three years. In 1972 I was invited to apprentice with SIR NORMAN HARTNELL in Haute Couture for another three years. I went on to specialise in making Bridal Wear and started Silk Rose Bespoke in 2007 and
I stopped in 2018 having made my 1000th bridal outfit and after over 40 years of working in the wedding business and started teaching teenagers The Art of Sewing. It is important to pass skills on and knowing that sewing was not being taught in schools I felt I could help. I loved doing this and was building up a new clientele and reputation in this field. I had regular sessions with 14 -17-year-olds who were showing the same passion that I had at their age. Then Coronavirus arrived. Not being one to sit idly by and watch the world go by I wanted to help in any way I could.
Silk Rose ~ Sew Suffolk started because I was asked to help with the shortage of scrubs for the NHS in March 2020. I was then asked to help the East Anglian Air Ambulance with 60 sets of scrubs for all their critical care paramedics and doctors.
I felt immensely proud to put my skills to such positive use during the initial COVID-19 crisis and to feel useful whilst being in lockdown. As the lockdown continued people asked if I would make face covers to protect themselves and their loved ones. Word got out that I was doing this. I was then asked to make some for local care homes, charities and our Town Council to help the volunteers who were delivering prescriptions .To date I have made about 2400 face covers. We should not underestimate the signal sent out by wearing a face cover, but it does not have to be boring.
I am now turning my creativity to writing and illustrating poetry as well but I still have a passion for fashion .
I look forward to Make it British being part of Silk Rose ~ Sew Suffolk's new future.
My products are made and designed by myself in my Suffolk workroom.
