Vetigraph opens training hub in Leicester to help bridge the skills gap

Make it British member Vetigraph has announced the opening of a fashion training hub in Leicester to help bridge the technical skills gap in the fashion industry.

As we’ve mentioned on this site before, there is a massive skills gap in UK fashion manufacturing. It’s not just garment machinists that are in short supply. Technical roles such as pattern cutters and graders are also hard to fill due to the lack of focus on these skills at fashion colleagues.

One Make it British member is hoping to help address this issue by opening the Fashion Forward Centre, a technical fashion training hub in Leicester.

Vetigraph – Fashion Digital Solutions are bringing their 25 years experience in developing computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and PLM solutions for the fashion, apparel and home furnishing industries to the new hub.

Leicester has the highest concentration of garment manufacturing businesses in the UK, but many are struggling to recruit in-house pattern cutters, graders and other technical employees. The new training hub aims to help fill some of these gaps by equipping students with the technical skills they need to be industry-ready.

Hervé Andrieu, CEO of Vetigraph Fashion Digital Solutions explains the decision to open the hub:

“Many of the experienced garment technologists and sealer graders who were trained in the heydays of British manufacturing will be retiring in the near future with no plans for replacements for lost skills. The industry is not always very good at looking at the bigger picture when it comes to skills. With Brexit looming, technical skills are going to become more relevant.”

The aim of the training centre is to help recent graduates, as well as people who have been on the technical side of the industry for some time, to embrace new technologies, particularly digital pattern cutting and 3D sampling.

The first courses started in July 2019, with an emphasis on beginner and intermediate digital pattern cutting. Vetigraph have plans to expand the training centre to cover all aspects of fashion design and production.
