Make it British catches up with Nicola Woods of new British label Beautiful Soul and finds a designer who is loving the challenge of manufacturing in Britain.
Beautiful Soul is a British, luxury womenswear label based in London’s Notting Hill that was founded in 2008. The company produces both a ready-to-wear collection (Beautiful Soul London) and a bespoke Kimono collection, both of which are made in Britain.
Make it British puts some questions to the brand’s Founder and Creative Director, Nicola Woods:
Can you tell me a bit more about yourself and why you set up Beautiful Soul?
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a fashion designer, I even wrote to ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ back in the day! After working in a fast paced career in corporate insurance for 11 years, I took a sabbatical to travel globally and whilst in Tokyo, feeling mesmorised, excited and inspired, I realised that I needed to make radical changes to my lifestyle and revisit my childhood ambition of design.
Returning to London, I then trained at the London College of Fashion, earning a BA in Fashion, Design and Technology.
How would you describe the Beautiful Soul collections?
The label’s signature is a blend of timeless evolving style with true global consideration. Quintessentially English with a wholly international appeal, it is a fresh and innovative label that emits sophistication. Our attention to detail and standards of quality place a strong emphasis placed on product longevity. Material remnants feature as fastenings and embellishments, adhering to the policy of zero-waste whereby every last thread of fabric is used in the creative process.
Why did you decide to manufacture in Britain?
I am proud to be British and I am a perfectionist. My attention to detail and standards of quality are superior and I want to build a brand that supports the decline of the apparel industry in the UK. We are facing difficult times, but it is more important than ever for entrepreneurs to boost the economy and find solutions. I love the challenge.
Who makes your products?
We are using a number of small CMT units in London. We are actively researching additional manufacturers throughout the UK in preparation for our growth.
Where do you source your raw materials from?
Beautiful Soul employs the most exquisite fabrics, incorporating unique signature prints (designed in-house in London), luxury vintage fabrics, British wool, British lace and sustainable organic fabric.
What has been the hardest part of getting your clothes made in Britain?
The most difficult part is quantities and finding a manufacturer who believes in your brand ethos and supports your growth. It is important for us to build a lasting relationships with all of our manufacturers.
And what has been the best part?
Control – as a perfectionist, it is important to visit manufacturers on a regular basis and we can do so without any difficulties. Communication is key and plays a fundamental part in building lasting relationships with crucial partners throughout Beautiful Soul’s supply chain.
