When we moved into our 20 acre small holding in North Wales, we decided to keep Alpacas. When shearing season came we naively thought it would simply be 'shear and ship'. Sadly, the value of raw unprocessed fleece is worth very little on the open market – we’d be lucky to cover our shearing costs. We couldn’t bear just destroying the fleece, so we found a local Welsh mill that helps us process the fleece. We realized if we had problems profiting from our fleece production, other similar sized producers are bound to have to problems too. So we contacted producers of both sheep and alpaca fleece, asking if they would like us to promote their fibre and yarn.

And so SMD Knitting was born. We focus on British wool, and support the British independent spinner where we can. We stock the likes of West Yorkshire Spinners, Baa Ram Ewe, Jamieson and Smith, Garthenor etc. In the near future we will also sell our own brand yarn, made of those fleeces of our very own Alpacas.
