Committed to preserving British manufacturing, each bag produced by the company is handcrafted in the UK by a team of skilled craftsmen and women. Despite enormous pressure to satisfy demand with an overseas production model, Deane has ensured that each stage in producing the company’s traditionally British bags takes place on British soil. Inspired to create a good quality, sturdy classic school bag after failing to find anything suitable for her children, Deane set out to find a UK based manufacturer to help in her quest to create the first Cambridge Satchel. Working with a number of UK based manufacturers; the company began production of their satchels until demand became so high that the company decided to set up its own factory. In 2011 Deane officially opened the doors to the company’s first factory based just outside Leicester, employing many locally skilled craftsmen and women. In 2013, having outgrown its first site, the company moved premises to a new larger factory. Still based just outside Leicester, the larger site enabled production to increase threefold. Today the factory team can make around 17,000 bags per month but also continues to support other UK based manufacturers who help to meet the ever-growing demand.
