How easy is it to dress head to toe in UK-made clothing?

I’ve seen an increasing interest in what we can, and are, making here in the UK.

People are wanting to find out just how easy is it to dress completely in UK-made clothing. The answer – you can if you know where to look!

It’s not unusual for me to get one or two journalists a week getting in touch. Usually because they’re looking for someone who makes a certain type of product; they want to pick my brains for some figures on UK manufacturing; or they’re covering sweatshops in Leicester. Again.

Lately, that has been different. I’ve had three recent calls from journalists all specifically writing about how much UK-made clothing you can actually find in the shops.

It seems that with the UK finally leaving the EU at the end of next month there is an increased focus on what we can, and are, making here in the UK. And of course the journalists can’t find much of it in the big stores.

Guardian journalist and TV presenter Adrian Chiles was a prime example. I helped him dress head to toe in UK-made clothing for a programme for Radio 4 called Living British. Not knowing where to go and how to locate clothing that was made in Britain, he contacted me to help him find stuff.

I then turned to our Make it British members, who rushed to Adrian’s assistance and sent all manner of suggestions. From jeans to hats, bow ties to shirts, and even underpants and Christmas jumpers.

Adrian was pretty impressed with the fact that there were still products made here and of the quality of the products I showed him.

It’s certainly become easier to find UK-made products now than it was when I set up Make it British nearly a decade ago. Back then no one was talking about UK manufacturing or buying British.

I think that 2021 is going to be THE year for businesses that make in Britain…and for many others who are switching their production back to the UK and Adrian’s Radio programme will be the first of many.

We’ve certainly got lots of exciting things planned for next year, as it’s also the 10 year anniversary of Make it British!

…and the best bit about this focus in the media on buying British? It actually translated into sales for our members, which is what it is all about.

Do you have a UK-made brand and are interested in joining a community of like-minded people who proudly sell products made in Britain?
